On Wednesday, August 29, Apple confirmed the acquisition of a startup focused on creating lenses for AR glasses

Apple Inc. confirmed that they already acquired Akonia Holographics, Longmont Colorado-based. The company was founded by a group of holography scientists in 2012. Holographic data storage is originally the main focus of the company before altering to creating reality glasses instead.

According to Akonia, their technology is designed as thin, transparent smart glass lenses that display vibrant, full-color, wide field-of-view images. Akonia further added that they lifted $11.6 million in 2012.

It was said that Apple has a history of acquiring smaller companies but they don’t consider deliberating any of their purpose or plans of the acquisition. In the year 2013, Apple acquired PrimeSense, an Israeli firm that made three-dimensional sensors.

In 2017, Apple also acquired Vrvana, a company that develops a mixed-reality headset that lets users experience conventional opaque display. This acquisition shows a much clearer guide that Apple wants its consumer to experience augmented reality device.

Apple’s acquisition of Akonia is one of the clearest sign that Apple is spending effort into technologies that support reality lenses and headset.

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, said that the planned technology will be a genius thing. The acquisition date and price was not announced but there are some rumors that the deal happened in the first half of 2018.
